(Hickory, N.C.) Cable operators exploring innovative ways of making their networks more eco-friendly should examine a new backup power fuel cell solution from CommScope, Inc., a global leader in infrastructure solutions for communications networks, which will be on display in the new Green Pavilion at the SCTE Cable-Tec Expo® 2009. CommScope’s Fuel Cell Cabinet utilizes hydrogen-powered fuel cells to provide an environmentally friendly DC backup power solution for cable network head-ends and hub equipment. Unlike diesel generators or batteries, the only by-products of hydrogen fuel cells are heat and water. With the highest density integrated fuel cell system available in the market and a cabinet design that is modular and flexible, CommScope’s Fuel Cell Cabinet can meet stringent backup power needs and improve system reliability.

“In the cable industry, the trend is well underway to find new innovative ways to improve the reliability and environmental impact of backup power solutions,” said CommScope’s Anil Trehan, chief technology officer, Carrier and Cabinet Solutions. “CommScope is honored that its Fuel Cell Cabinet was recognized by the cable industry as an innovative green solution and worthy of inclusion in the SCTE Green Pavilion.”

CommScope’s commitment to the environment goes beyond fuel cell technology and includes the following green solutions:

•BrightPath® RF-over-glass (RFoG) solution – BrightPath enables cable operators to deploy fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) in specific areas with a unique tapped architecture that requires no powered amplifiers, requiring significantly less electrical power from the grid, significantly reducing energy consumption and associated cost.
•RoHS compliant – CommScope offers complete coaxial and fiber cable product lines and Signal Vision® amplifiers that meet RoHS standards. The company plans to add Signal Vision advanced digital passives lines including splitters and directional couplers to its list of RoHS compliant solutions in early 2010.
•ReelSmart® cable reel recycling program – CommScope has helped customers recycle the wooden and composite material reels on which its cables are shipped since 1988. ReelSmart realizes an annual reuse of more than 100,000 reels, effectively saving approximately 30,000 trees.
The SCTE Cable-Tec Expo takes place October 27-30 in Denver, Colorado. CommScope invites all attendees to view its Fuel Cell Cabinet in the Green Pavilion and other unique cable industry solutions at booth #7089.
