(Goldsboro, N.C.) Siemens Energy has been awarded contracts to supply a total of five state-of-the-art gas turbine-generator packages for the Lee and Sutton combined cycle power plants in North Carolina. Progress Energy Carolinas, Inc., a subsidiary of Progress Energy Inc., a Fortune 500 energy company with more than 3.1 million customers in the Carolinas and Florida, is the purchaser of the equipment. The new, state-of-the-art natural gas-fueled power plants will be replacing old coal-fired generation, resulting in an estimated 60 percent reduction in the facilities’ carbon dioxide emission rate, 100 percent decrease in mercury emissions, nearly 100 percent decrease in the sulfur-dioxides emissions rate and more than 95 percent decrease in the nitrogen-oxides emissions rate.
The 950-MW rated Lee plant is part of the H.F. Lee Energy Complex located near Goldsboro, N.C. The Siemens scope of supply encompasses three SGT6-PAC 5000F gas turbine packages, consisting of a SGT6-5000F gas turbine with a rated capacity of 206 MW, an air-cooled generator and the innovative SPPA-T3000 plant control system. The turbine includes a dual fuel - Ultra Low NOx (ULN) combustion system, extended outage interval parts and low carbon monoxide (CO) turndown. The Lee plant is expected to be commissioned in December 2012.
Two SGT6-PAC 5000F gas turbine packages consisting of the same components will be installed at the 600-MW rated Sutton plant, located near Wilmington, N.C. The Sutton plant is expected to be commissioned in December 2013.
“These state-of-the-art power plants will provide highly efficient and environmentally friendly electricity to meet the demands of Progress Energy’s growing customer service area,” said Lloyd Yates, president and CEO of Progress Energy Carolinas.
“We are very pleased that Progress Energy has once again chosen Siemens as a provider for their advanced power plant projects,” said Randy Zwirn, President and CEO of Siemens Energy, Inc.
“This order further diversifies the mix of environmentally compatible power generation sources that will meet our future needs for a clean, sustainable energy supply.”
The Lee and Sutton power plants will be able to operate in either simple cycle mode or combined cycle mode. The SPPA-T3000 gas turbine-generator control system will allow flexible operation in either mode.
Highly efficient gas turbines are part of Siemens’ Environmental Portfolio. In fiscal 2009, revenue from the Portfolio totaled approximately EUR23 billion, making Siemens the world’s largest supplier of environmentally friendly technologies. In the same period, the company’s products and solutions enabled customers to reduce their CO2 emissions by 210 million tons. This amount equals the combined annual CO2 emissions of New York, Tokyo, London and Berlin.
The Siemens Energy Sector is the world’s leading supplier of a complete spectrum of products, services and solutions for the generation, transmission and distribution of power and for the extraction, conversion and transport of oil and gas. In fiscal 2009 (ended September 30), the Energy Sector had revenues of approximately EUR25.8 billion and received new orders totaling approximately EUR30 billion and posted a profit of EUR3.3 billion. On September 30, 2009, the Energy Sector had a work force of more than 85,100. Further information is available at: www.siemens.com/energy.
