Duke Named A Recipient of HP Innovation Research Awards

(Durham, N.C.) HP (NYSE:HPQ) today announced it has selected more than 60 professors from around the world to receive awards as part of its third annual HP Labs Innovation Research Program (IRP). Duke University was one of the institutions named.

HP IRP creates opportunities for faculty and students at leading colleges, universities and research institutes to conduct breakthrough collaborative research with HP.

Highlights

The 2010 HP IRP call for proposals attracted 375 submissions from 323 researchers in 202 universities across 36 countries. This year a total of 65 projects received funding, of which 40 are receiving funding for a second or third year.

Additionally, in collaboration with HP’s Office of Global Social Innovation, three researchers were selected to receive philanthropic grants supporting their work in cloud computing services in education.

* Applicants for the 2010 awards were invited to submit proposals in response to a number of published topics, all of which are aligned with the eight key research themes of HP Labs, the company’s central research arm.
* Among the repeat winners were projects from the University of Michigan; Imperial College, London; the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay; and Technische Universitaet in Berlin.
* Newly funded proposals came from Duke University; the Hebrew University of Jerusalem; the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada; and 18 other institutions.
* In the last 12 months, a total of 118 papers detailing HP IRP-funded research were either published or accepted for publication and 21 invention disclosures were filed.

Cloud computing as a core theme

* In the area of cloud computing, HP Labs has been focusing on delivering HP’s vision of Everything as a Service (EaaS). With EaaS, billions of users can access millions of different services, via thousands of service providers, over millions of servers that are processing exabytes of data – all delivered through terabytes of network traffic.
* HP IRP projects are helping to address many of the challenges that need to be overcome to create the massive infrastructure necessary for EaaS.
