(Conover, N.C.) Reliable high-performance construction leader John S Clark Company, LLC (JS Clark) joined state and local leaders at the dedication of the newly built, environmentally friendly Newton-Conover Middle School on Sunday, July 29. JS Clark led the construction of the state-of-the-art LEED facility, which will serve as the new home for up to 850 middle schoolers, many who will be moving over from their current learning environment in the oldest building in the school system, built in 1976. “The construction of this school is a milestone not only for the students and their families, but for the entire community,” said company spokesman Gene Kemp, who attended the event on behalf of the JS Clark Board of Directors. “We’re extremely proud to add this to our portfolio of institutional, commercial, retail, and technology projects across North Carolina,” he added.
JS Clark’s talented team of construction professionals working on the Newton-Conover school used their experience and knowledge in producing LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) buildings to help produce the second “green” school in the county. Industry-leading tools, technology, and methodologies associated with sustainable construction were used by the team in supporting LEED elements of the project such as 576 solar panels on the school’s roof which will provide almost 15% of the facility’s total energy. During the project, JS Clark implemented a construction waste management plan to divert a large amount of material from landfills.
Newton-Conover City Schools is seeking Platinum Level LEED certification for the middle school, which, if approved by the U.S. Green Building Council, will make Newton-Conover the first school in the state to achieve that status. JS Clark recently marked the completion of a new 151,000-square-foot middle school in Durham, North Carolina, which is seeking Gold Level LEED certification.
Other green elements of the school include automatic light sensors, low-flow toilets, strategically placed windows to increase natural light, and energy-efficient windows.
Amenities designed for producing 21st century globally competitive students include a large auditorium with seating for 429, an art room with an outdoor patio where students can work, a media center, computer lab, music room, dance/drama rehearsal room, dining hall, gymnasium, locker rooms, and comfortable teacher’s lounge.
The dedication ceremony featured a full slate of activities and presentations, including many students, several of which sang the apropos choral selection, “The Future Begins with Us.” Dr. Barry Redmond, superintendent of Newton-Conover City Schools, led an expression of gratitude to members of the Board of Education; officials from JS Clark; architects from Little Diversified Architectural Consulting; and representatives from Catawba County Government.
The JS Clark team was also given numerous thank you messages and compliments by the Catawba Country Commissioners and the Board of Education.
A reception in the school cafeteria followed the dedication, and attendees then engaged in touring the facility.
Once the school opens to students at the start of the 2012-2013 school year, it will trigger further activity within the school system; the current middle school building will be converted into the new Thornton Elementary School, and that building will be converted into the new Newton-Conover Health Science High School.
JS Clark continues its leadership of building high-end educational facilities throughout the state in addition to other projects of significance and scope, including UNC Wilmington’s new teaching lab; Fayetteville’s New Century Middle School; and Fayetteville Technical Community College. During 2012, the company will have completed over $100 million of projects related to education in North Carolina.
