Tranzyme Pharma Announces Successful Completion of Drug Discovery Collaboration With Bristol-Myers Squibb

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C.–Tranzyme Pharma (Nasdaq:TZYM), a biopharmaceutical company focused on discovering, developing and commercializing novel small molecule macrocyclic compounds, today announced the successful completion of its chemistry-based drug discovery collaboration with Bristol-Myers Squibb. As a result of the joint research efforts, Tranzyme has transferred compounds to Bristol-Myers Squibb for further development across multiple drug targets. As part of this agreement, Tranzyme retains the option to further pursue select collaboration targets for internal development. (more…)

I-SPY 2 Trial Results in Proposed Accelerated FDA Approval Path for Breast Cancer Drugs

(Washington, D.C.) I-SPY 2 (Investigation of Serial Studies to Predict Your Therapeutic Response with Imaging and Molecular Analysis)  is a unique clinical trial managed as a public/private partnership by the FNIH Biomarkers Consortium. I-SPY 2 is an innovative adaptive clinical trial that is testing new drugs in high risk breast cancers in the neoadjuvant (drug treatment prior to surgery) setting, and will advance the understanding of which drugs work best with tumor types with different biomarker profiles. The Biomarkers Consortium has worked closely with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) throughout the development of the project to promote our joint interest in improving the efficiency of clinical trials. The FDA has published a draft guidance describing a new, accelerated drug and biomarker approval paradigm for drug evaluation based on a pathological complete response (pCR) endpoint in high risk breast cancer , and an accompanying commentary (Prowell and Pazdur 2012). New Biologics Company Launches with Focus on Active Orthopaedic Healing

Bioventus LLC, a new company providing active orthopaedic healing, launched today following the finalization of the strategic venture between the company’s owners, an Essex Woodlands led investor syndicate group and Smith & Nephew, the global medical technology business. Headquartered in Durham, N.C., Bioventus grew out of Smith & Nephew’s former Biologics and Clinical Therapies division and includes nearly 500 U.S. employees from that group, as well as innovative and successful products to help accelerate bone healing and treat osteoarthritis pain. For the time being, employees outside of the U.S. will remain with Smith & Nephew and Smith & Nephew will distribute products on behalf of Bioventus outside of the U.S. This business will be transitioned to Bioventus over time as required legal and other approvals are obtained.
