Jobs Council Tours NC State’s Smart Grid Research Center

Business leaders on the White House Council on Jobs and Competitiveness toured the FREEDM Systems Center, an NSF-funded research center on NC State University’s Centennial Campus which focuses on smart grid technology and distributed energy. The tour was in conjunction with a “listening session” in which Council members heard from national and local energy and smart grid executives on the obstacles and opportunities associated with growing jobs in their industry. NC State’s Chancellor Randy Woodson hosted the event. The roundtable discussion was one of five simultaneous sessions that coincided with President Obama’s visit to North Carolina. (more…)

B&W Announces $417 Million Waste Management Contract at Department of Energy Facility

(B&W TSG) has been notified of a contract award estimated at approximately $417 million to Idaho Treatment Group LLC (ITG) to manage and operate the U.S. Department of Energy’s Advanced Mixed Waste Treatment Project (AMWTP) at the Department’s Idaho Site. ITG has been formed by majority partner B&W TSG, URS Corporation, and EnergySolutions Federal Services, Inc. Novel Man-Made Material Could Facilitate Wireless Power

Electrical engineers at Duke University have determined that unique man-made materials should theoretically make it possible to improve the power transfer to small devices, such as laptops or cell phones, or ultimately to larger ones, such as cars or elevators, without wires. This advance is made possible by the recent ability to fabricate exotic composite materials known as metamaterials, which are not so much a single substance, but an entire man-made structure that can be engineered to exhibit properties not readily found in nature. In fact, the metamaterial used in earlier Duke studies, and which would likely be used in future wireless power transmission systems, resembles a miniature set of tan Venetian blinds. (more…)
