(Durham, N.C.) Benefacting, an online marketplace where people get together to sell or buy goods and services to benefit charity, is officially launching today, just in time for the April observance of National Volunteer Month. To celebrate, the Durham-based nonprofit is hosting a contest encouraging college students in the Triangle to give back. The Benefacting Volunteer Challenge runs April 1 through 30 and helps college students turn their volunteer time into charitable donations via its website, www.Benefacting.org. (more…)

The conference is designed to serve officers, staff, volunteers and others employed by or interested in non-profit organizations. The general public is invited to join members of Durham’s vibrant entrepreneurial community October 15th for the first annual C.F.D {Creative Food Drive} to benefit the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina. Local breweries, food vendors, and musicians will be participating in this free event at the Durham Farmers Market which features a competition between 16 teams designing and constructing any type of standalone “sculptures” they can conceptualize made out of non-perishable food items. (Raleigh, N.C.) Inter-Faith Food Shuttle and Feeding America, the nation’s largest hunger relief organization, today released a new study which reveals in the greater Triangle area, 23.2% of children under the age of 18 are struggling with hunger. The study, “Map the Meal Gap: Child Food Insecurity 2011”, also reveals that there are children struggling with hunger in every county in America. Nationally, while one in six Americans overall are food insecure, the rate for children is much higher: nearly one in four children are food insecure. (more…)

After April 1, the price is $125. The conference is on Friday, April 15, 2011, at the William & Ida Friday Center for Continuing Education in Chapel Hill. Nonprofits that serve all 100 counties of North Carolina will come to Raleigh on Tuesday, March 1 to talk with their legislators about their how their work improves the lives of the people in the lawmakers’ home districts. They will also educate legislators about the economic impact of nonprofits in North Carolina, which provide more than 400,000 jobs in the state, on the second annual NC Nonprofits Day. Numerous partners are involved, including Communities in Schools of North Carolina, the N.C. Conservation Network, Prevent Child Abuse North Carolina, United Way of North Carolina, and the Z. (Greensboro, N.C.) The Cemala Foundation has awarded a grant of $32,500 to HandyCapable Network (HCN) to provide 185 computers to economically disadvantaged families of Guilford County elementary school students. Delivery of the computers, planned for Oak Hill Elementary School, will go to families that do not own a computer. Distribution will begin on Tuesday, February 22, at 4:30 p.m. at Oak Hill Elementary School. At that time, the first 50 computers will be delivered. Subsequent distributions, 50 computers at a time, will occur on March 30, April 13, and May 3. (more…)

(Raleigh, N.C.) The N.C. Center for Nonprofits today released its analysis of a new Urban Institute report on government contracting with nonprofits. The N.C. Center’s assessment shows long-standing systemic problems experienced by North Carolina nonprofits that contract with federal, state, and local governments. The problems include complex government bidding and reporting requirements, unexpected mid-term contract changes, and even nonpayment. All of these have placed hundreds of nonprofits in difficult and sometimes impossible circumstances to serve people in need. (more…)

One Economy, a global nonprofit that uses innovative approaches to deliver the power of technology and information to low-income people, announced today that Kelley Dunne will serve as the new CEO. Dunne will assume the role by the end of 2010. Dunne joins One Economy with more than 20 years of experience in the telecommunications industry, including the successful creation of DigitalBridge Communications Corp. and leadership positions at One Point Communications, Verizon and AT&T/Bell Labs.
